3. The stems and fixings Leaves are attached to the backing using UV-stable threads or clips rather than glue, which tends to perish over time. Better-quality hedging uses multiple attachment points per leaf so foliage doesn’t come loose in high winds or heavy rain.

The Manufacturing Process, Step by Step

  1. Design and colour matching — Real hedge species (boxwood, laurel, ivy, etc.) are studied and replicated, mixing several leaf shades and sizes to avoid the flat, uniform look of low-quality products.
  2. Leaf moulding — Leaves are injection-moulded in batches, often with slight variations built in deliberately to mimic the natural irregularity of living foliage.
  3. UV stabilisation — Pigments are treated with UV inhibitors during production, not sprayed on afterwards, so the colour is protected all the way through the material rather than just on the surface.
  4. Assembly — Foliage is woven or clipped onto the backing mesh by hand or machine, built up in layers to create depth and density rather than a flat, single layer of leaves.
  5. Fire retardant treatment — For commercial use, panels are treated to meet fire safety standards, an essential requirement for hotels, offices, and public-facing installations.
  6. Quality testing — Finished panels are checked for colour consistency, leaf density, and durability before dispatch.

Why UV Treatment Matters So Much

UV degradation is the single biggest cause of artificial hedging looking tired. Untreated or poorly treated plastic will fade, turn brittle, and lose its colour within a year or two of direct sun exposure. Properly UV-stabilised hedging is manufactured to resist this fading, keeping its colour consistent even after years outdoors — which is why UV treatment is one of the first things worth asking about before buying.

Indoor vs Outdoor Hedging: Does It Need to Be Different?

Yes. Outdoor artificial hedging needs UV stabilisation and weatherproof backing to cope with rain, wind, and sun exposure. Indoor greenery, by contrast, doesn’t need UV treatment but often uses softer, more tactile foliage since it won’t face the same weathering — and it’s usually optimised for appearance under artificial lighting rather than direct sunlight.

Artificial hedging is a long-term investment, and the manufacturing quality is what determines whether it still looks realistic in year one — or year ten.
